Salone Financial Inclusion & Fintech Meetup
February 22 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm GMT
Please join us for our February 2018 meetup and seminar discussion for the financial inclusion innovation ecosystem in Sierra Leone. We will convene on Thursday the 22nd at 5:00pm at Sensi Tech Hub in Aberdeen, Freetown.
Our meetup will provide a forum for discussions on key issues around financial inclusion in the present-day context of Sierra Leone, and to bring together sector stakeholders for dialogue on development in the space. The key objective of the forum is to build knowledge and capacity and drive engagement and collaboration by actors contributing toward the country’s agenda and strategy for an inclusive financial sector.
Thursday’s event will focus on “Fintech in Salone”. The Sierra Leone context presents a particularly formidable environment for financial inclusion – 87% of the population remains unbanked, and post-conflict recovery was slowed by the Ebola crisis. Innovative technology for financial services has the potential to reduce the vulnerability of the poorest at scale and drive inclusive economic growth. Such ideas can help catalyze digital financial services and accelerate partnerships and collaborations toward achieving the the sustainable development goals (SDG). Together, our ecosystem can plan concrete steps to work together to increase financial inclusion and pathways out of poverty for many more Sierra Leoneans, and to contribute to the way forward for the nation as a whole.
Thursday’s event will feature the following speakers:
Richard Loat, Comic Relief
Richard is spending time in West Africa to explore opportunities and partnerships to leverage Comic Relief resources and programs to unlock opportunities for development and inclusion. He is inspired to build and use tools and interventions at the intersections of humor, sport and storytelling to help citizens escape from cycles of poverty.
Chris Czerwonka and Alexandre Waldman, InvestED
InvestED is a Ghana-based social enterprise startup that has recently launched in Sierra Leone in partnership with Salone Microfinance as a finalist in the Sierra Leone FinTech Challenge. InvestED bridges edtech with fintech by creating mobile education and awareness campaigns to increase capacity of citizens’ financial literacy and business skills – and then link the rich profile of learner journey data to customer acquisition and creditworthiness scoring for financial institutions and telecoms. These drive the shared goals for customer empowerment, meaningful engagement and adoption of mobile money and digital financial services.
Morris Marah, Sensi Tech Hub
Tech Innovation Hub is the first hub of its kind to be established in Sierra Leone. Its main objective is to build and progress a local technology innovation ecosystem that drives economic and social development through providing an open and stimulating community hub. Technologists, entrepreneurs and creatives can come together to develop their ideas and access cutting-edge tools, grant funding, events, incubation and acceleration programmes, networking, training and job opportunities.
The meetup’s supporting sponsor, Financial Inclusion Forum Africa, is based in Ghana but brings together people and organizations from across the continent who are passionate to promote innovative solutions to financial inclusion. Financial Inclusion Forum Africa was formed to create a common voice for the Financial Inclusion sector in Africa. The forum constitutes a group of people who are passionate about FI and not necessarily working in the space. Members are driven by passion for FI and DO NOT represent their organizations but themselves.
