South American City of 15,000,000 To Launch Blockchain-Based Digital Identification Services
Argentina’s capital city, Buenos Aires, has announced plans to launch a digital identification service using the Self-Sovereign Digital Identity (SSI) protocol QuarkID and the zkSync Era blockchain. The initiative aims to provide a secure and privacy-focused platform for its 15 million residents to access important documents such as birth and marriage certificates. Additional documents, including proof of income and academic verification, will be made available in the future.
Diego Fernandez, the city government’s secretary of innovation, stated that Buenos Aires is the first city in Latin America, and one of the first in the world, to integrate and promote this new technology. He believes that this move will set the standard for how other countries in the region should utilize blockchain technology for the benefit of their citizens.
The launch of this initiative comes at a time when data collection programs are facing scrutiny and controversy. The Worldcoin (WLD) project in Kenya, for example, was recently suspended due to privacy concerns related to the collection of personal data. However, QuarkID and zkSync assure that their digital ID program prioritizes user privacy and data protection.
By leveraging zkSync and Ethereum as the backbone of the program, personal data stored on-chain is secure and mitigates the risks of identity theft and personal information attacks associated with centralized data-storage technologies.
This digital ID program is expected to improve the efficiency and accessibility of public services in Buenos Aires and potentially transform the way residents interact with the government.
