Warner Music’s Head of NFTs and AI Departs: Report

Warner Music Group’s chief digital officer, Oana Ruxandra, has stepped down from her position after leading the major label’s adoption of emerging technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) for the past three years. According to internal company emails reported by Billboard, Ruxandra’s departure is amicable, and plans are already underway to find her successor.

During her tenure, Warner Music, home to popular music acts like Cardi B, Ed Sheeran, and Madonna, actively encouraged its artists to incorporate technologies like non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and AI into their acts and promotions. The label launched pilot programs and formed partnerships with various blockchain-backed companies and projects, including Polygon Labs, OpenSea, LGND Music, DressX, and The Sandbox.

The focus of these initiatives has been to strengthen the relationship between artists and their fanbases, as highlighted by Ruxandra in her parting words. For instance, Warner-signed rapper Earl Sweatshirt released a highly anticipated album as a collection of NFTs on the decentralized streaming platform Gala Music. Owners of these tracks received reward points that could be exchanged for unique experiences with the artist, including appearing in his music videos, meeting him in person, or even having a joint session.

Though the reasons for Ruxandra’s departure remain unknown, it is unlikely to signify a change in Warner’s commitment to technologies like NFTs and AI. The label’s CEO, Robert Kyncl, former chief business officer of YouTube, is renowned for his advocacy of emerging technologies. Even during a round of company layoffs in March, Warner Music retained all roles related to blockchain and AI, underscoring the significance of these technologies in the label’s current business strategy.

A spokesperson for Warner Music declined to comment on Ruxandra’s departure. However, her exit is unlikely to disrupt the label’s continued exploration and implementation of cutting-edge technologies. With Kyncl’s proven track record at YouTube, where he drove the expansion of the platform’s creator ecosystem and championed innovation, Warner Music is expected to maintain its focus on technological experimentation and advancements in the industry.
