As Apple has shifted to a “rolling thunder” of new features for iOS 18 where it brings out new features and functionality over time, so has it done the same for its enterprise tools. iOS 18.1 brings some important features to Apple IT admins with their device management solution.

MDM can disable RCS messages
With iOS 18.1, Apple IT admins can now prevent users from sending or receiving Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages. This adds another layer of communication control for enterprise environments that rely on tighter messaging restrictions.

The update restricts users from deactivating per-app VPN connections, ensuring that all app-specific traffic is routed through the VPN as mandated by the organization’s device management configuration. This enhances security by maintaining consistent VPN use.

iOS 18.1 allows Apple IT admins to prevent users from recording phone calls, whether for privacy, legal, or compliance reasons. This feature helps enforce stricter call recording policies across managed devices.

Administrators can now prevent users from hiding apps, which is useful in scenarios where visibility of all installed apps is required for compliance. In addition, this update allows blocking of apps from being locked by users, reinforcing app visibility and access.
