Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck has encountered a production snag, reports suggest, with a pause in the manufacturing process at the Austin, Texas facility. The temporary halt, lasting for a week, was initiated to address an unexpected issue concerning the vehicle’s accelerator pedal, as described by several media outlets, including CarBuzz.
The problem came to light when a would-be Cybertruck owner was informed by Tesla about an “unexpected delay” in the delivery of their all-electric pickup truck. A message from the company indicated the need to cancel a scheduled delivery appointment due to the sudden hiccup, promising to update the customer once a new delivery timeframe could be established.
Amplifying concerns, a current Cybertruck owner shared a distressing experience on TikTok. In the video, the owner demonstrated how the cover of the Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal slipped forward, becoming trapped under an interior component. This resulted in the pedal being stuck in a depressed position, forcing the truck into unintended acceleration. The driver noted that while braking could override the unintended acceleration, the vehicle would resume speeding up upon releasing the brake. The situation was eventually managed, and the owner has since been driving the vehicle with the pedal cover removed.
Despite the alarming nature of this incident, Tesla has not announced a recall to address the pedal issue. Nonetheless, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed to NBC News its awareness and ongoing communication with Tesla to gather more details on the matter. As of now, Tesla has not officially commented on the issue. Efforts to reach out to the automaker for an explanation have been made, and updates will be provided upon receiving a response.
The Cybertruck, which marked its launch in December 2023 after several postponements, represents a significant stride into the future of electric vehicles for Tesla. With aspirations of manufacturing up to 250,000 Cybertrucks annually, the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, has tempered expectations by stating that achieving this production target may not be feasible until 2025 or later.
This recent hiccup puts a spotlight on the challenges facing Tesla as it seeks to innovate and expand its electric vehicle lineup, underscoring the importance of quality assurance and safety considerations as the company progresses towards its ambitious goals.
