Next Computing, a designer and manufacturer of high-performance computing platforms, has recently expanded its product line with two innovative edge computing solutions built to accommodate the rigorous demands of various high-performance server applications. These include but are not limited to Packet Capture, Telco Edge, and Open-RAN applications, each requiring robust and transportable servers. Termed “fly-away kits,” these new offerings, the NextServer-X 1U and 2U models, are crafted to merge portability with premium performance, enabling quick and efficient deployment across diverse locations.

The unique selling point of these kits lies in their design which combines high-core count Ampere Altra processors, providing unmatched computational power in a portable format. The 1U variant can house up to two 1U server chassis, whereas the 2U version accommodates a single 2U rack mount chassis. What sets these kits apart is their rugged TSA-certified travel cases, complete with wheels for effortless mobility across airports and train stations, encapsulating the servers in what could be described as a giant, navigable piece of luggage. Both cases come in a size of 21.75″ x 13.875″ x 9.00″.

Despite their compact and transportable design, the NextServer-X models do not compromise on power. Both the 1U and 2U configurations feature single-socket Ampere Altra processors, offering between 32 and 128 cores, support memory configurations up to 2TB of 3200MHz ECC RAM, and are powered by two hot-swappable 600W 80 Plus Platinum PSUs for optimal redundancy. The systems also include quadruple 1G copper Intel i210 Gigabit Ethernet controllers, amongst other networking options to cater to different application requirements.

In terms of storage and GPU capacity, the two models cater to the diverse needs of users. The 1U kit emphasizes portability and server density, featuring two removable 3.5GB/s NVMe 2.5″ drive bays without dedicated GPU support. On the other hand, the 2U model notably extends its storage capabilities, supporting up to eight NVMe 2.5″ drives with removable mid-plane-based drive bays that can be configured in various RAID setups for enhanced data security and performance. Additionally, this model can accommodate Nvidia’s RTX A2000 or RTX 4000 graphics cards, enhancing its suitability for AI and machine learning applications.
