In a remarkable fusion of cultures, Monterrey-based band Los Shinigamis del Norte has been captivating audiences by merging norteño music, a genre with deep roots in Mexico’s musical tradition, with the dynamic world of anime songs, creating a unique sub-genre known as nortaku. This innovative approach has not only showcased their versatility as musicians but has also sparked conversations about cultural appreciation and the blending of seemingly disparate worlds.
Formed in 2017, the group originally gained attention through the efforts of vocalist and former YouTuber, Yair “Lalothing” Guzmán, known for his anime song parodies infused with norteño elements. Their debut performance in a norteño style was at the Conve-Animex in Monterrey in June 2021, where they performed dressed as Naruto-themed cowboys, a move that quickly propelled them into the limelight.
In an exclusive interview with Anime Corner, the band members shared insights into their musical journey, cultural influences, and the reception of their work both within and beyond Mexico’s borders. The lineup includes Lalothing on vocals, Erasmo Herrera on accordion, Marcos Bocanegra on bass guitar, Fernando Dominguez on bajo quinta, and Diego Garcia on drums. Each member brings a unique background to the group, balancing their passion for music with careers in various other fields.
Their repertoire primarily consists of upbeat anime covers, a stark contrast to the traditional themes of heartbreak and narco-trafficking often associated with norteño music. This juxtaposition, according to the band, resonates with fans who grew up with both anime and norteño music, creating a nostalgic blend that appeals to a broad audience.
The band’s growing popularity was further evidenced by their viral performance at a convention, where they were dressed in Akatsuki robes from Naruto, attracting international attention. Additionally, the recent passing of Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball, saw fans worldwide sharing Los Shinigamis del Norte’s content in tribute to the global impact of his work.
Los Shinigamis del Norte are ambitious about their future, dreaming of performing in Japan and collaborating with renowned Japanese artists such as Yoko Takahashi and Ikimonogakari. They remain grateful for the support of their fans and are committed to continuing their exploration of cultural fusion through music. With recognition from figures within the Mexico-Japan Association and endorsements for their respectful and professional approach to cultural blending, the band is a testament to the harmonious possibilities that exist between different cultural expressions.
Aside from their music career, Los Shinigamis del Norte are advocates for the appreciation and understanding of both Mexican and Japanese cultures. They emphasize the joy, daring endeavors, and exploratory spirit that define Mexican culture, inviting fans globally to engage with and celebrate this rich cultural tapestry. With plans to release new music and maintain their presence on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, as well as music streaming services like YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify, Los Shinigamis del Norte are poised to continue breaking barriers and uniting cultures through their groundbreaking fusion of norteño music and anime.
