Leading players from the travel and aviation sectors have joined forces to explore sustainable aviation solutions through a web3 travel ecosystem. DER Touristik Online (DTO), Lufthansa Group, and Chain4Travel, a Web3 startup, have come together to address the growing pressure on the global travel industry to enhance its sustainability practices. They recently held a hackathon in Frankfurt, where DTO developers delved into tokenization and aimed to create a platform that could facilitate the consumption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) within the Camino Network.
The travel sector is increasingly focused on environmental considerations and leveraging technology to address sustainability challenges. The hackathon aimed to find a compelling and simplified way for travelers to obtain SAF credits when booking a vacation, trace carbon emission reductions, and gamify the process of acquiring and spending SAF.
The winning team introduced a unique concept: a loyalty program supported by a green token called “Dertorium.” This token would serve as a symbol of collective commitment to environmental preservation and coexist with existing loyalty systems rather than replacing them.
DTO, an online sales and travel technology company, employs around 9,200 people. The Lufthansa Group, with over 100,000 employees, reported revenues of over 32 billion euros in 2022. Chain4Travel specializes in blockchain applications for the travel industry and brings its expertise to the partnership.
Although many developers had limited prior exposure to Web3 technology, guidance from BytePitch helped expedite the learning curve. As a recognized name in the Camino community, they were able to develop functional prototypes on the Camino Network’s Columbus testnet within four days.
While the immediate outputs of the hackathon are promising, Ralf Usbeck, CEO of Chain4Travel, emphasized the need to address sustainability in the aviation industry. He praised the approach taken by the partnership, stating that it focuses on what makes a compelling use case on the blockchain, particularly within the Camino Network.
As the demand for sustainable aviation solutions continues to rise, partnerships like this one highlight the industry’s determination to adopt innovative technologies and practices. With the collective expertise of DER Touristik Online, Lufthansa Group, and Chain4Travel, the future of sustainable aviation looks promising.
