New Dragon’s Dogma 2 Game Rivals Elden Ring in Open-World RPG Excellence

by Hallie Frederick

Dragons Dogma 2 could be the closest thing we have to a sequel to Dark Souls. Now, Dragons Dogma 2 is a reality. Its official name is Elden Ring, having been showcased in a stunning trailer at E3 2019, and its an action RPG rooted in classic Dark Souls mechanics. Elden Ring is likely the most sought-after FromSoftware game since Dark Souls 3, and its being developed by many of the same minds behind the team that worked on the internationally acclaimed series.

But what exactly do we know about Elden Ring? Well, not a lot. From the game’s brief reveal trailer, we’ve noted that it has a massive open world, with a new focus on mounted combat the footage shows a character fighting while riding a horse. But were still left in the dark in many respects. The world of Elden Ring is said to be heavily steeped in fantasy, and are happy to hear that George RR Martin, author of the acclaimed A Song of Ice and Fire series, is helping to create the game’s lore. Its worth noting that Martin’s actual role in the project hasn’t been clarified, so were unsure if hes writing the entire story or just providing the lore upon which the game is built.

Its been over a decade since Dragons Dogma 2 originally released, giving fans plenty of time to pore over every frame of the game. RPG enthusiasts have especially taken to min-maxing their characters and diving deep into the lore, preparing for Elden Ring’s release. Its no secret that FromSoftware’s games can be challenging, so its likely that the Dark Souls community will clash with the Dragons Dogma 2 crowd once Elden Ring lands. Of course, the fact that Elden Ring is designed to be more approachable than other game indicates that FromSoft is actively trying to bring in new players. This is honed by the promise of an expansive world and more relaxed difficulty.

Despite our excitement, we should temper our expectations. Dragons Dogma 2 has been in development for a while, but a release date is still far off. FromSoftware is famous for announcing games and then keeping fans in the dark for extended periods, so it might be some time before we see Elden Ring in the flesh. Until then, all we can do is speculate and wait.

Additionally, it’s worth pointing out the impact that Elden Ring could have on the RPG genre. Dragons Dogma 2 solidified FromSoftware’s place as a top-tier developer in the industry, and a new game could only solidify that reputation even further. If Elden Ring can deliver on its promises, it could become the next big thing in the gaming world. But, as with all pre-release hype, we should take everything with a grain of salt. Time will tell if Elden Ring can truly live up to the high expectations that come with being a Dragons Dogma 2 successor.
