beyond jogging: the innerspaces of running by Coach Mike Spino, Ph.D, was the initial running book that laid out the mind/body/spirit program, which foreshadowed the Mindful Runners movement in the United States. beyond jogging has become a classic and a reprint of the original sensation is now available here at a reduced price. The training programs and philosophies are an integration of the interval training devices he learned from the great Mihaly Igloi, who immigrated to the United States from Hungary in the early 1960’s after using his method for his Hungarian runners to break every world record; however, he then came to the United States after the Russians invaded Hungary in 1955. Here he created an American distance-running dynasty with the Los Angeles Track Club.Another major influence to Spino’s training method was the free spirited philosophy of Australian Percy Wells Cerutty, who visited Esalen Institute for an extended stay in 1974. Cerutty coached Herb Elliott, who never lost a race and was an Olympic Champion in 1960 using mentally focused training. The first athlete Spino coached was Esalen founder, Michael Murphy, who became a world-class middle-distance runner. Murphy collaborated on the methods and wrote the forward and afterword for this volume. Spino became the Esalen Sport Center director from 1974 to 1979 after his lifetime friend David Meggyessy had held the helm from 1972 to 1974. beyond jogging is for every runner, especially those just getting into the fitness world.Mike Spino grew up in Lyndhurst, New Jersey (to whom beyond jogging was dedicated). After running the 5th fastest time in New Jersey history in 1962, he earned a full athletic scholarship to Syracuse University, where he broke the school mile and many cross-country records. He later moved from Southern California to the San Francisco Bay area and studied open education with Herbert Kohl, the innovative educator and author of many books including 36 Children. Before joining Esalen, he was on the staff of Otherways, Kohl’s open school, and wrote some of his most influential articles such as “Running as a Spiritual Experience” and “Running For.”When Coach Spino began teaching what was to become beyond jogging, he formulated numerous group programs while coaching Esalen founder (his first pupil) to become a world class master’s runner. In 2018 his work was rediscovered by the sport fashion company District Vision, founded by Tom Daily and Max Vallot, and they reprinted beyond jogging and sponsored presentations at the Boston Marathon. Spino did a seminar with Michael Murphy (then aged 89) in Northern California. With an introduction by Murphy, beyond jogging is now available at a reduced cost. In Beyond Jogging Spino provides practical training plans and coaching philosophies in his first of six books. At Life University he was elected into their first Hall of Fame with credentials of winning 12 national NAIA championships, including 5 in a row, which still stands as a national record. Earning a Ph.D. at the prestigious Lille 2 University in Lille, France, he documented his work with 75 students from Kenya and published the proceedings in a well-known research document. His daughter, Marissa, is a doctor at NYU specializing in pathology, and son Christopher is a musician and song writer.
