The policing context, as it relates to martial arts, is an important one, being a significant contributor to the early spread of Asian martial arts around the world. Policing arts, especially through W.E. Fairbairn, are one of the roots of military combative systems. It would be true to say that the policing context is one of the broadest and most difficult problems a martial art can hope to solve. This manual was produced by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1967. It was originally entitled Technique & Use of the Police Baton – A Handbook for Law Enforcement Officers. It was serialised in three parts (July, August and September) in FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin magazine in 1968. It is a notable course in that, whilst compact, it is rather comprehensive and makes interesting use of the features of the old style police baton. The notes indicate a certain amount of practical experience has been used in it’s compilation.Apart from a change in title for commercial reasons, some formatting changes have been made. Originally this work would have been available on a larger page format. To both assist in the transition to a smaller, more accessible format and to eliminate the need to refer to illustrations several pages away from the relevant text, a certain amount of reformatting has been made in the hope that it will assist the reader to get the most from the manual. We are proud to make this often overlooked text available to the public.
