The most splendid way to travel from Siliguri to Darjeeling is by way of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a train journey into the world of the Himalayas.British engineering made this pioneering work possible, the idea having been to transport the world famous tea of the same name from Darjeeling, quickly, economically and safely to the coast from where it was shipped to the United Kingdom.The train climbs to an altitude of more than two thousand metres, negotiates eight hundred and seventy three bends and crosses more than five hundred bridges.Sonada Station lies at an altitude of almost seven thousand feet and is where life takes place on the streets and the people are dressed for the cold.
