God Made Us Different by Lindsey Coker is a delightful children’s picture book that tells the story of a group of classmates who all come from diverse backgrounds and enjoy the ways that make them different. It is told through a lovely rhyme narration that is sure to bring a ray of sunshine into the reader’s world. Lora Look, the illustrator, creates a vivid and realistic world of colors that splash across the pages, inviting the reader to stay a moment longer and to take another look at her creation as it imbues the soul. The expressions that the children have on their faces are so happy, with smiles and goodness, that it makes you want to smile as well and make as many new friends as you can.

Lindsey’s God Made Us Different is an essential children’s picture book that truly needs to find a home on every child’s shelf, if not every schoolroom. The last sentence really struck a chord deep within myself. But I’d like those treasured words to be a surprise for readers. In a time when we find ourselves needing and looking for support, friendship, understanding, and love, God Made Us Different will help to be that guiding path to find those vital elements that we all crave and need. The message it provides is one that everyone should hear, not just children, but adults, especially. Hopefully one day the world will be as united as the children in God Made Us Different.

This story of Lucy and her diverse collection of friends is a delightfully designed lesson in childhood innocence and the honesty of the unvarnished existence of human nature. The obvious lessons in diversity and sentiment of social tolerance are timely and essential in today’s overall education of our world’s children. There’s ample time devoted to playing, singing, and interacting with the other students, who’ve all become good friends. Each of them is different, unique and that makes them special, but they are also all united by those qualities that make them one-of-a-kind. Lucy has friends from all over the world. She also knows kids who use hearing aids to hear and others who roll along in wheelchairs. They all feel accepted at their school, and they are so used to each of them being different that it doesn’t feel strange at all.
