What is a Journal Affirmation?

Affirmations are often used and given as tools to focus on important concepts of self-esteem, growth and achievement.  These simple few-word phrases are designed to motivate us as we repeat them with focus.  There’s no doubt the exercise of focusing on simple, profound concepts can be helpful.  But in my own life, I often felt as though these lovely words often set me up for failure.  We can repeat such phrases as, “I am beautiful,” all day long, but what does that really mean?  How do I go from repeating the phrase to actually feeling it as a reality of my experience? I wondered what I was missing, why I wasn’t reaping all the rewards of using affirmations to improve my life.

It also occurred to me that if I was struggling with this, others might be as well, especially young people.  What it must be like as society advises, “If you just love yourself, everything will fall into place.”  Without the tools to help them come to their own realizations, we unknowingly set them up for failure.  And if we as adults can’t master this ourselves, why do we expect it from them?

The missing piece of the puzzle seemed so intuitive.  Since every path is an individual path, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution.  There is no single perfect answer.  The way to extract the meaning from an affirmation is to personalize it, examine it, feel it, write about it, fire those brain synapses and experience it as tangibly as possible from as many angles as possible.  “Journal Affirmations,” devote an entire book to the exploration of a single affirmation.  Each entry, bit by bit, word by word serves to peel back the layers as we come to our own unique understanding of what the affirmation means in our own lives.  “Journal Affirmations,” provide a door to discovery, discussion and sharing exercises that help us to finally receive the gifts offered via affirmations.

From the Inside Flap

An affirmation on its own is a powerful thing. However, flexing the muscle of an affirmation with the conscious expression of your own words, thoughts and experiences is a transformative thing. Use this affirmational journal to not only absorb the powerful messages in each affirmation, but to accentuate them tenfold by the expressions of your own creation.
