Hydrographics or HydroGraphics, also known as immersion printing, water transfer printing, water transfer imaging, hydro dipping, watermarbling or cubic printing, is a method of applying printed designs to three-dimensional surfaces. The resulting combinations may be considered decorative art or applied art. The hydrographic process can be used on metal, plastic, glass, hard woods, and various other materials.
OVERALL PROCESS
1) PREPARATION – Make sure the item has been stripped of grease, dirt and gunks and other stuff that may interfere with the adhesion of your design. Durability of any hydrographics coat depends upon complete and careful preparation of the surface before painting. The surface should be even and smooth. Any cracks, and holes or any other imperfections do not let the paint adhere correctly to the surface. Inadequate surface preparation results into majority of failures.
2) PRIMER PAINT – Use the appropriate primer for your substrate. It may depend whether its a metal, plastic, fiberglass, ceramic or wood. Consult your local paint shop for the best option with your market or you can also leave us a message.
3) PAINTING THE BASECOLOR – Paint your preferred basecolor. Most of the patterns are transparent so it a color of your choice would greatly affect your overall output.
4) ACTIVATION & DIPPING – Lay the film in the water. Make sure the ‘sticky side’ (try to wet your fingers and touch both sides of the film) of the film is at the bottom. Meaning it should be the one touching the surface of the water. Remove creases/folds or bubbles underneath the print by blowing it lightly. Wait 60-80 seconds before activating it. Spray the activator as consistent as much as possible and without too much disturbance on the water. Once properly activated, submerge your subject by getting into the water on an angle to avoid trapping bubbles.
5) WASH – Wash your dipped item using a running water to get rid of the sticky residues left by the print and let it dry for a while.
6) CLEARCOAT – Spray the clearcoat to protect your print and item once its dry. It would be your choice whether its a gloss, a semi-gloss, or a flat finish.
