Product Description
Have you ever wondered how places like Intercourse, Pennsylvania or Hell, Michigan got their names? So did David Kravetz. As he traveled across America’s back roads, David visited these strangely named places, like Uncertain, Success, Nice, Santa Claus and Boring to present a firsthand look at dozens of small towns with unique and often funny names. While some travel books may mention these towns, the authors rarely, if ever visited them. That’s what makes “Less Beaten Paths of America” more than just a travelogue. David has been to all of the places in this book, talked with the residents, ate the food, and writes of these places with the affection of a devoted family member, keeping one eye on the road, and the other on the details that make us unique.
Review
Odd town names have a habit of leaping up from a map — and directly into your navigational brainstem. Once you notice the dot for Tightwad, Missouri, can you ever unsee it? And how do you fight the turn urge at the “Coolville This Exit” sign?
David Kravetz couldn’t. Whenever he discovers an intriguing place name, he plots a trip and visits in person. An indefatigable back road warrior, “Sumoflam” has been sending attraction tips and photos to Roadside America for years, while posting on his own lessbeatenpaths travel blog. His affection for towns and their stories led him to write his first book: “Less Beaten Paths of America: Unique Town Names.”
In his photo-rich paperback, David visits many Roadside America places: he endures Hell, Michigan; compares physiques with the Man of Steel in Metropolis, Illinois; and fights off stultification in Boring, Oregon. He spends time in little burgs with names such as Ponder, Success, Bugtussle (there are two of them), and Virginville. David blends his personal account of road trips with discovered details about town history — along with advice about how to improve your own obscure town pilgrimages. –

Author David Kravetz and I are completely simpatico. He has no problem zigging out of his way to visit Bugtussle, Kentucky or zagging in another direction to document Uncertain, Texas. He will visit Hell, Michigan or Tightwad, Missouri just because the of the town’s unique or humorous name. I love that!
In his new book
Less Beaten Paths of America: Unique Town Names (Volume 1) David documents his adventures and shares interesting details about peculiarly named towns. It is a quick, quirky, and informative read whether you are planning your own adventures or you just want to experience David’s obscure town visits from the comforts of home.
