This holder is in place to keep the batteries from going dead after manufacturing.Trouble shooting: Make sure the plastic tab that surrounds the on/off switch has been removed. If you have issues with the ball lighting up at first, please gently tap the threaded end onto a hard surface. Move the on and off switch back and forth and tap the end and the unit should light up. After you get it to light up it should work normally and you will not be required to tap the end.
