Sixteen years after their radio debut, the Maddox Brothers & Rose still whoop it up like no others could. If anything, their already diverse array of influences expanded even further: traditionals, spirituals, bluegrass, blues, swing, boogie-woogie, Cajun, Tejano, cowboy, and honky tonk all stick to their musical ball of tape. As silly as they got—and that could be awful darn silly—their instrumental powers and Rose’s tough-as-nails vocals always kept them afloat. Not many acts could (or would want to) cover Gene Autry, Hank Williams, Slim Whitman, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Molly O’Day, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Thompson, and “Take My Hand Precious Lord” with equal intensity.
