At the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow during the height of the Cold War, the gold medal went to the young American pianist Van Cliburn. “Is he the best?” Khrushchev asked a nervous jury in 1958, “Then give him the prize.” On his return to New York, he was carried aloft through the streets in triumph. Conductor Kyrill Kondrashin, who is no stranger to such acclaim, met with a similar success when he came to New York in 1962. The two join forces on this disc for Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3.
