From Victorian to neoclassical to Arts and Crafts, San Francisco’s interior design style — like the irrepressible spirit of the city itself — is innovative, free-thinking, and universally appealing. In
San Francisco Interiors, Diane Dorrans Saeks, the California editor of
Metropolitan Home, unveils the finest creations of the Bay Area’s preeminent interior designers and artists, leading readers on an intimate tour of some of the city’s most coveted residences. Peek inside an art collector’s Russian Hill studio or an elegant Pacific Heights mansion. With designs by Anthony Hail, Stephen Shubel, Diane Chapman, Arnell Kase John Dickinson, and Scott Lamb; over 200 lavish, full-color photographs; and a designer’s resource guide, this lovely volume will inform and inspire anyone who appreciates gracious living.
From Booklist
The cosmopolitan aura that pervades San Francisco is emphasized again and again in this print showcase of 33 houses, lofts, apartments, and even one villa situated in or around the City by the Bay. No one design style is indigenous to these dwellings; surprisingly, though, amid the eighteenth-century, Victorian, Edwardian, arts and crafts, moderne, and contemporary rooms, none are strictly 100 percent pure minimalist. Author (
California Country et al.) Saeks does her best to describe intention and results without resorting to sheer adjectival flattery, while photographer Weintraub shoots mainly interiors with a soft filter and muted palette. Many interior designers contributed, as did a few more-than-local celebrities: the head of visual merchandising for the Gap and Banana Republic; author Armistead Maupin; the TV critic of the
Chronicle; and a myriad of artists. Ideas, inspiration, and, definitely, a look at how the other half lives.
