Baruch
Spinoza (1632 –1677) was a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese Sephardic origin and one of the early thinkers of the Enlightenment era, considered to be one of the great “rationalists” of 17th-century philosophy and one of the most important and original thinkers of the era. Inspired by the work of Rene Descartes, Spinoza made considerable contributions to nearly every area of philosophical discourse, including metaphysics, epistemology, political philosophy, ethics, the philosophy of the mind, and the philosophy of science. Spinoza’s body of work can largely be found in two tracts: the
Ethics (published posthumously in 1677) and the
Theologico-Politico Treatise (1670). Minor works include his posthumously published correspondence and
Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect (1677). Spinoza remains one of the most important and most widely studied and read philosophers of the 17th century, this work having profound influences on the development of continental philosophy and the Enlightenment.
