The year was 1977. The internet had not yet come to be. Cell phones were not even yet a concept. GPS and satellite navigations were years down the road of development and nautical travel was described in terms of compass deviation, dead reckoning, and chart plotting. Law enforcement communication was comprised of 5 watt hand held radios, tube/transistor type mobile radios, and station to station radios at the district offices. Text messaging was several decades in the future. And Menominee County was a sportsman’s paradise. Fresh from the police academy, Conservation Officer Wayne Coleman is about to embark upon the adventure of a lifetime. His long time dream of becoming a Game Warden has finally been realized with his assignment to the forests and farming country of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. During the next quarter century many changes and developments make his career varied and exciting. Wild Turkeys are introduced into his county. Increased populations of Black Bear bring more hunters, new challenges and new problems. The local fishery expands with the introduction of new species of sport fish. Changes in hunting, fishing, and recreational safety laws mean new methods of enforcement; some for the better; others, not so much. Ride along with officer Coleman as he recounts the experiences of his career. Some of the stories are exciting and informative. Some are humorous, some are tragic. Some will show mankind’s darker face, some will renew your faith in humanity. The stories are based on true accounts with many of the names changes for numerous, obvious reasons. About the Author

Wayne Coleman was born and spent his childhood in the county of Alpena, Michigan. His love of the outdoors and the inspiration of two conservation officers early in life led him to pursue the life of a Michigan Game Warden. His dream became a reality in 1977 upon being assigned as a Conservation Officer in Menominee County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The path to the realization of his dream included service in the United States Army, a tour in Vietnam, and six years as a State Park ranger. Wayne enjoys the retired life in Newaygo, Michigan with his patient wife, two cats and a dog.
