In a new scam involving Bitcoin, scammers have targeted individuals through email, claiming that their personal data has been leaked from various crypto projects. One consumer received such an email and reached out to WGAL News 8 Consumer Reporter Brian Roche with her concerns.
The email received by Kathleen stated that her personal data had been compromised in several instances and offered her a report on the leaks along with compensation in Bitcoin. To make it more appealing, the scammers mentioned that 0.3 Bitcoin is currently valued at over $8,000. The email also provided a link through which Kathleen could claim the money.
Curiosity piqued, WGAL decided to investigate the authenticity of the email. They determined that the link provided was safe and clicked on it. However, rather than receiving the promised report and compensation, they ended up with another message resembling the initial email, this time using the name of a well-known crypto trading platform called Binance.
Binance is a legitimate platform that has faced legal challenges worldwide. This association added an air of credibility to the scam. However, upon further investigation, WGAL discovered that the email was not from Binance. Instead, it appeared to be a phishing scam attempting to trick recipients into divulging personal information or sending money.
Kathleen, the recipient of the scam email, emphasized that she had never been involved with cryptocurrency or Bitcoin. This highlights the fact that scammers are targeting individuals who may be unfamiliar with cryptocurrencies, taking advantage of their lack of knowledge and understanding.
