Star Wars Outlaws is on the mend. Ubisoft’s big open-world take on a galaxy far, far away didn’t quite make the impression any of us thought it would, but that hasn’t stopped the team from promising to improve the experience. So if you’ve been waiting to go along with Kay Vess on her adventure, or want to try another playthrough, you’ll want to know what’s coming. Some of the biggest fan grievances are being fixed, starting with combat and weapons.
While our very own Star Wars Outlaws review wasn’t the most favorable, I have faith that Ubisoft can turn the open-world game around. The future of Star Wars Outlaws might be uncertain, but it doesn’t mean Ubisoft isn’t putting the effort in.
Even though the next Star Wars Outlaws update will focus on combat, don’t forget that there’s even more work being done. Ubisoft says both stealth and character controls are also being improved upon, so what we’re getting soon isn’t the end of the Outlaws redemption arc.
As outlined by Star Wars Outlaws creative director Drew Rechner, this next patch aims to improve the weapons and combat of the game with a slew of colossal changes. Rechner starts by saying Ubisoft knows players have “a desire for a deeper and more engaging combat loop,” with weapon and enemy stats, weapon feel, and the game’s cover system all being changed.
Firstly, the stats on all weapons and enemies should now mean headshots are more rewarding. Opponents will also have weak points, so extra tough enemies can be taken down with a “well-placed precision shot at the right moment.” Once you do take NPCs out you’ll also notice they have new defeat animations and hit reactions, to make each feel more diverse than before. Ubisoft adds that the highly requested change of holding onto weapons you find in the world longer is also being added, so you can “make longer-term strategic choices.”
All of Kay’s weapons should now feel more distinct as well, as the feel of each has been tweaked. Rechner says aspects like “recoil, fire rate, ammo, and accuracy for every weapon” have been changed alongside audio, VFX, and UI.
Ubisoft has changed the Star Wars Outlaws cover system, too. Kay can knock enemies out from behind objects using the power module on her blaster. You also can swap which shoulder the camera rests on while aiming.
Ubisoft has confirmed that Star Wars Outlaws update 1.4 is dropping on Thursday November 21, the same day it comes to Steam. You can read the team’s full statement here.
