Students explore blockchain technology

The Philippine Blockchain Week hosted a session called “Block Bytes: Blockchain 101 for Students,” where hundreds of university students came together to discuss and dispel misconceptions about blockchain technology. The event was organized by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and took place from September 19 to 21 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City.

Students from various universities such as Mapua University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Our Lady of Fatima University, University of Batangas, and AMA Computer Learning Center actively participated in discussions, asked questions, and explored the practical applications of blockchain in different industries. The resource person for the session was Arlone Abello, also known as Coach Miranda Miner, who is a crypto market analyst, educator, and CEO of Global Miranda Miner Group (GMMG).

During the session, Abello discussed the fundamentals of blockchain technology and addressed common misconceptions surrounding it. He identified the five layers of blockchain technology as Presentation, Consensus, Network, Data, and Hardware Infrastructure. Additionally, he pointed out misconceptions such as blockchain being a tangible asset, solely focused on cryptocurrency, confined to computer systems, functioning like a traditional bank, or existing in the physical realm.

Abello emphasized the importance of dispelling these myths and embracing accurate knowledge about blockchain technology. He stated, “Misconceptions can hold us back from harnessing the true potential of blockchain technology. By dispelling myths and embracing accurate knowledge, we can unlock a world of possibilities of blockchain and drive innovation in various industries.”

Given the nascent regulatory landscape of blockchain in the Philippines, Abello highlighted the need for blockchain education to be a current focus. To cater to this demand, Abello founded Web3 learning platforms called Elite University and Feastgold, through which he shares valuable trading techniques, expert advice, and the latest news in the crypto world with more Filipinos. In 2022, GMMG launched “CryTalk: University Caravan,” a free educational initiative aimed at equipping students with basic knowledge of blockchain technology. So far, the team has visited 12 Philippine universities and engaged with students and faculty members of the Junior Confederation of Finance Associations and the National University finance executives.

Emmy Lou Delfin, the Director of DICT’s Industry Development Bureau, urged students to recognize the immense potential of emerging technologies like blockchain. She emphasized that blockchain is not just a buzzword but a powerful tool that can revolutionize industries, enhance transparency, and drive innovation.

Despite the bear market, Abello expressed his expectation to see more and more students taking an interest in the real-world implementations of blockchain beyond cryptocurrencies. He encouraged universities and colleges to incorporate GMMG’s free blockchain and cryptocurrency courses into their educational programs.

Overall, the “Block Bytes: Blockchain 101 for Students” session provided a platform for university students to learn, discuss, and debunk misconceptions about blockchain technology. It showcased the importance of education in unlocking the true potential of blockchain and driving innovation in various industries.
