From Blasphemous to Hollow Knight, there are some truly brilliant action platformers out there for you to play – however, South Korean studio Newcore Games is aiming to “rejuvenate” the genre with its new game The Devil Within: Satgat. With soulslike combat and dark fantasy samurai, it’s certainly got all the ingredients to be a terrific and challenging experience. After showing promise during early access, the day has finally arrived for Satgat to hit 1.0, and it’s out right now on Steam.
In the world of Joseon, a mysterious spire that once brought life to its previously desolate land has turned into a gateway for hellish demons to terrorize it. You play as an “amnesiac swordsman” called Kim Rip, and as well as stopping these demonic enemies and the corrupted spire, your goal is to find your lost memories. Visually, The Devil Within: Satgat is absolutely beautiful, weaving historic Japanese aesthetics with dark future elements. The soundtrack, too, is immense, with metal maestro Matt Heafy from Trivium lending his talents to the score.
While everything is 2.5D and there are plenty of challenging traversal puzzles that you’d expect from any of the best platform games, the combat is a treat for fans of Dark Souls, Nioh, or any other amazing soulslikes. There is a wide range of melee weapons for you to find and use. Perfectly-timed parries are crucial, as they give you the option to deploy a guard, dodge, or dash skill. There is also a detailed skill tree that brings an element of buildcrafting into the mix. And, most importantly, the bosses have big red health bars. Gotta have a big red health bar.
In a new announcement post coinciding with its 1.0 launch, Newcore says: “Newcore Games designed The Devil Within: Satgat as a means to rejuvenate the action-platformer genre that we once loved. Drawing inspiration from a plethora of games and after nearly 3 years of development and loads of feedback from our 7-month Early Access community, we hope that The Devil Within: Satgat keeps you engaged with all that it has to offer.”
That passion for the genre and that all-important early access time seems to be paying off. Of the 55 Steam user reviews that have come in over the last 30 days, which spans not only 1.0 launch day but the tail end of early access, none have been negative. Its lifetime review rating is also ‘very positive,’ sitting at an excellent 80%. As well as the game simply being great fun to play, it’s also worth pointing out that it’s incredibly well-priced. While you’re not going to be spending 100 hours in Satgat like you would in a major triple-A soulslike, there’s still a lot on offer given the cost.
The Devil Within: Satgat has now fully launched on Steam, and with its introductory discount you can grab it right now for just $21.24 / £16.99. Should you want to try before you buy, there’s also a demo you can download for free. To learn more about it or add it to your library, head to its Steam store page here.
