An engaged NFT community that holds the original ‘doge’ meme is collaborating with local governments in Japan to erect a statue in honor of Kabosu, the dog that inspired the iconic meme. The statue is set to be unveiled on November 2 in Sakura, Japan, which also happens to be Kabosu’s birthday. The project is a collaboration between the community and the City of Sakura, with plans to place the statue in Sakura Furusato Square, a location frequently visited by Kabosu’s owners.
Fans of Kabosu, the Shiba Inu who became the face of the Doge meme and Dogecoin, raised funds last year to build the statue. The community is not stopping there, as they even have dreams of placing the statue on the moon one day. The group, known as PleasrDAO, has been operating for over two years, taking Doge to various places such as Hollywood and even space, with a Doge NFT going on a SpaceX mission to the moon.
PleasrDAO’s goal is to become the ultimate gathering place for the Doge and meme community online. They plan to hold interactive events to celebrate the unveiling of the statue, giving attendees the opportunity to meet Kabosu and offering certain privileges based on their NFT holdings.
PleasrDAO, a group of NFT collectors who buy high-priced NFTs and build communities, views DOGE as an acronym for “Do Only Good Everyday.” They donate to meaningful charities worldwide, with their community, Own The Doge, listed as the top crypto giver to Save The Children.
In addition to the statue, Own The Doge is also working on a documentary about Kabosu’s life and the rise of the doge meme. The doge meme originated when Atsuko Sato clicked a picture of Kabosu for her blog in 2010. It gained viral status when a Reddit user named John Monarch shared the photo and referred to it as “doge.” The meme has since become deeply embedded in internet culture and paved the way for the creation of dogecoin and other dog-themed tokens.
The doge meme’s impact cannot be understated, as it played a significant role in the cryptocurrency world. Dogecoin was launched in 2013, and other dog-themed tokens followed suit, commanding market capitalizations in the tens of billions of dollars at the peak of their popularity.
